Bartholomew At a Glance

• Son of Talmay/Born in Judea.

•Hebrew means, “God has given/gift of God”.

•“Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” Nathanael responds, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip in turn responded, “Come and see!”

•Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said to him “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”

•“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree” “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel”


Small T Tradition: The Death of Bartholomew

Tradition holds that St. Bartholomew traveled laboriously from Asia Minor to Armenia, to Phrygia and finally to India. In or about 61A.D., St. Bartholomew founded a Catholic community in India. Not long after, he incurred the wrath of the King, who had him skinned alive.
